Zeus is also the father of Athena, born out of his forehead Aphrodite, with Dione Apollo and Artemis, twins of Leto and Hermes, with Maia. But the major one was his marriage with Hera, in which Hephaestus and Ares were born. Zeus later on had relationships with various (mythological) women: Mnemosyne, Seleme, Alcmene, Demeter, Leto, Dione, Maia, and Io. Zeus overthrew his own father to protect his brothers, because “to insure his safety Cronus ate each of the children as they were born.” He defeated the Titans and Giants, sending them to Tartarus in the Underworld, and started the god era. Two of Gaeas’ Titans, Cronus and Rhea, had 6 children: Hestia, Hades, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, and Zeus. And with her own son, Uranus, she gave birth to multiple creatures, including Cyclopes, various monsters, and the Titans.

With Tartarus, she gave birth to Typhon, a minor Underworld god, and the father of all monsters. She created Uranus, Pontus, and the mountains. And with Nyx, Aether (light) and Hemera (day) were born. After her, came Gaea (Earth), Tartarus (the Underworld), Eros (love, life-bringer), Nyx (night), and Erebus (darkness).Įrebus created multiple minor gods, including Momus (blame), Thanatos (death), and Geras (age). “Khaos (or Chaos) was the first of the Protogenoi (primeval gods) to emerge at the creation of the universe,” ( Atsma, Aaron) responsible for fate. And the most astounding of it all, is that most of the creatures were part of the same family tree. They created amazing, and incredibly complex stories about every single thing that took part in their religion. The Greek Mythology was a huge part of the Ancient Greeks’ lives.
